Equine Therapy -
with Casey, our qualified Clinical Psychologist
What is Equine Therapy?
Equine therapy is a holistic therapeutic approach that involves interacting with horses to promote emotional, physical, and psychological healing. Through activities such as grooming, feeding, and ground-based exercises, participants develop trust, improve communication skills, and enhance self-awareness. Suitable for individuals of all ages, equine therapy can be particularly beneficial for those with autism, ADHD, and other neurodiverse conditions, as it provides a safe and non-judgmental environment for personal growth and healing.
In what ways would Equine Therapy be helpful for myself or my child?
Equine Therapy can be used to support both children and adults with ASC, ADHD, and other neurodiverse conditions. In the beginning, sessions will focus on overcoming any initial uneasiness and empowering you to develop a nurturing relationship with the horse. Horses, being naturally gentle and calm, have an exceptional ability to mirror and respond to human behaviour, making them highly effective at interacting with people in a patient and non-judgmental way.
For individuals who struggle to articulate their feelings, equine therapy offers a unique way to express emotions and feelings through their connection with the horse. Those who find it hard to trust others or be intimate with people often form strong bonds with their horses, experiencing affection, acceptance, and mutual respect. This non-verbal form of communication and emotional connection can lead to improved emotional regulation, enhanced self-esteem, and a sense of peace and wellbeing.
Process
The first step is to have an eligibility screening with your clinician and complete a questionnaire about your feelings and experiences over the past week. This process helps your clinician better understand your needs and work with you to create a collaborative plan involving both you and the horses.
Equine therapy sessions typically last around two hours and include a mix of on-site talking therapy and ground-based activities.
Fees
The eligibility screen is free of charge. Equine therapy is charged at £250 per session.
